Description
Alexander's Feast, or the Power of Music, with music by the Baroque master George Frederic Handel (Messiah, Water Music, Music for the Royal Fireworks, Zadok the Priest), sets an ode written to celebrate St. Cecilia's Day by England's first Poet Laureate, John Dryden.
Cecilia is the patron saint of music and her feast day (22nd November) became an opportunity for music-making, with specially written poems set to music for these occasions.
Handel's setting of Alexander's Feast, dating from 1736, was the first time he had set the English language and, although he felt he was taking a risk by not writing Italian opera, the public absolutely loved it. And this should come as no surprise: the listener is moved through highs and lows of emotion, in sublime music that foretells many of his greatest works.
