Description
Vivaldi’s Gloria (RV 589) is one of the most beloved and uplifting choral masterpieces of the Baroque era. Composed in Venice around 1715, it was originally written for the talented young women of the Ospedale della Pietà, an orphanage where Vivaldi served as maestro. After his death, the manuscript was tucked away in a private collection and remained virtually unknown for nearly two centuries until its spectacular "rediscovery" in the 1920s.
The piece is a joyful celebration, divided into twelve distinct movements that showcase Vivaldi’s characteristic energy and melodic brilliance. From the iconic, driving string opening of the first movement to the tender, soulful oboe and soprano solos in the Domine Deus, the music captures a vast emotional range. Whether it is the thundering choral harmonies or the intricate, dancing rhythms, the Gloria radiates a sense of light and vitality that continues to captivate audiences worldwide.
Perfect for both seasoned classical enthusiasts and first-time concertgoers, this performance promises an evening of soaring vocals and baroque grandeur. Don’t miss the chance to experience the timeless "Red Priest’s" most famous sacred work performed live in all its radiant glory.
Other pieces to be performed are:
- Lotti 'Crucifixus' 8 part
- Pergolesi 'Stabat Mater' (extract)
- Morley 'Sing we and chant it'
- Farmer 'Fair Phyllis I saw'
- Morley 'April is in my mistress' face'
- Morley 'Now is the month of maying'
- Gibbons ' The Silver Swan'
